Anna Chlumsky will join previously announced star Kristen Johnston in Mint Theater Company’s forthcoming revival of Maurine Dallas Watkins’ So Help Me God! The play will begin previews at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on November 18 and open on December 7, directed by Martin Platt.
In addition to Johnston and Chlumsky, the cast will include Brad Bellamy, Catherine Curtin, Amy Fitts, Jeremy Lawrence, Ned Noyes, Kevin O’Donnell, John G. Preston, Allen Lewis Rickman, Kraig Swartz, Peter Van Wagner, Matthew Waterson, Margot White and John Windsor-Cunningham.
Third Rock from the Sun star Johnston will star as Lily Darnley, a fabulous dramatic diva who must fend off a challenge from her ambitious but naive understudy (Chlumsky). The play was written in 1929 (20 years before All About Eve) by Watkins, a reporter-turned-dramatist whose 1926 play Chicago inspired the Kander & Ebb musical. So Help Me God! was optioned for Broadway under the title An Old-Fashioned Girl but the production was cancelled after the Stock Market crash.
Chlumsky's New York stage credits include Unconditional and The Fabulous Life of a Size Zero. Her films include In the Loop, Blood Car, My Girl 1 & 2 and the upcoming My Sweet Misery and Eavesdrop.
Scenic design for So Help Me God! will be by Bill Clarke, with costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Robert Wierzel and sound design by Jane Shaw.
The Mint has built its reputation for producing worthy but neglected plays by noteworthy writers.
